Chapter 489: Take good care of her

“Ranran, you can’t keep hurting yourself like this.”

Seeing the glaring bloodstains in her palms, Wen Jin’s eyes abruptly contracted. That blood was not fresh; it must have been from when they were in the hotel room, a fact he had remained unaware of at the time.

She was using physical pain to alleviate the suffocating heartache. But this degree of physical pain was completely ineffectual against the torture in her heart, which felt like a laceration.

“Brother, I don’t know what to do?”

Wen Ran couldn’t control herself anymore after hearing his worried and reproachful words, and she began to cry inconsolably.

The helplessness in her voice tugged mercilessly at Wen Jin’s heartstrings.

Stretching his arms, he tenderly drew her into an embrace, letting her weep in his arms, while his large hand gently patted her back as he tried to comfort her. “Ranran, your illness can be cured. Director Gu is constantly looking for a solution. His family is the century-old medical family. He will definitely find a way to cure your disease.”

Wen Ran couldn’t utter a word, she just continued to weep, heartbroken.

She was petrified of what Jingyi had told her and didn’t know if she should share it with her brother.

After crying for several minutes, she finally composed herself. She lifted her head from Wen Jin’s chest, looking at him with her heartbroken eyes, which stirred her sadness once more.

“Bro, do I have any other diseases in addition to this one?”

Her voice held a tinge of hesitance.

Upon hearing her question Wen Jin’s expression shifted almost reflexively. “No. What nonsense has Fu Jingyi been feeding you? Besides being unable to have children, you are very healthy.”

The anger was evident in his voice by the time he finished speaking. He loathed Fu Jingyi with a passion for his absurd claims.

Seeing that Wen Ran had once again averted her gaze from him, he furrowed his brows slightly, “Ran Ran, what else did Fu Jingyi say to you?”

Wen Ran didn’t respond to his question and instead quietly said, “Bro, I want to sleep for a bit.”

“Alright, take a nap. Once you’ve woken up, I’ll go downstairs to see what Auntie Li has prepared for dinner. I’ll come to wake you once dinner is ready.”

Upon seeing that she was unwilling to divulge anything more, Wen Jin didn’t pressure her further. With a slender figure that rose from the couch, he softly reassured her.

Wen Ran followed Wen Jin and stood up, nodding to his advice before venturing towards her bed.

She crawled into bed, covering herself with the blanket, quietly closing her eyes.

Only after seeing Wen Ran close her eyes did Wen Jin leave the room quietly, closing the door behind him. His tall frame lingered at the doorway, staring at the closed door for a few seconds before finally turning to leave.

Just as Wen Jin was descending the stairs, his cell phone began to ring.

After glancing at the incoming call and then towards the upstairs where Wen Ran was, he darkened his gaze, pressing the answer button without waiting for the other to speak, and said proactively:

“Ranran just went to sleep.”

“Did she… say anything?”

On the other end of the phone, there was a pause, Mo Xiuchen’s voice came through, deeper and raspier than usual, betraying his restrained emotions.

“The one who called Ranran was Fu Jingyi. I’m not exactly sure what he told her. But she just asked me if she had any other diseases besides the one reported in the newspaper.”

Upon hearing Wen Jin’s words, there was once again silence on the other end of the phone.

For Fu Jingyi to make a call to Wen Ran, he surely must have divulged something in order to drive a wedge between them. His goal was unabashedly to get Wen Ran to leave Mo Xiuchen, so that he could have an opportunity to make his move against her.

What could he have possibly said to Ranran? Mo Xiuchen could guess some of it.

Wen Jin, on the other side of the phone, could not see Mo Xiuchen’s reaction. Seeing his silence, he frowned slightly before speaking in a gentle tone, “Fu Jingyi must have told Ranran more than just that. She said she didn’t know what to do. This uncertainty likely refers to how to face you. Mo Xiuchen, Ranran needs some time to calm down and understand things. Pressuring her will only serve to backfire.”

“I understand!”

Earlier, when Wen Ran suggested divorce, he speculated that the person on the phone must have revealed something unknown to them. If it were merely those claims in the newspaper, Ranran wouldn’t be so resolute.

He was not expecting it to be Fu Jingyi.

Having covertly stolen Ranran more than twenty years ago, he knew her predicaments better than anyone. That culprit who had tormented Ranran was indeed her worst nightmare.

Even now, he worried that Ranran would recall the incidents from her childhood.

If possible, Mo Xiuchen would rather Wen Ran remain blissfully oblivious to these truths throughout her life.

No matter the circumstances she was currently in, or the experiences from her childhood, he did not wish for her to discover any of it.

At this moment, he felt incredibly useless. There had never been a time when he considered himself as impotent as he did now.

Despite failing to protect the woman he loved the most, even being incapable of finding and punishing the man who had wronged her, or locate the poison in her body, he couldn’t even exact revenge on her behalf.

Worse still, he didn’t even know what Fu Jingyi looked like now. Even if they were to brush past each other on the street, he wouldn’t be able to recognize the man. This sensation was akin to having one’s throat strangled but being powerless to retaliate.

It was utterly disastrous!

Hearing Mo Xiuchen’s repressed and lost tone, Wen Jin couldn’t bear it. After a moment of hesitation, he added, “Ranran just doesn’t want to see you for the time being. Give her a few days, when she’s ready, you can come and take her home.”

“Okay!”

Mo Xiuchen didn’t tell him about Wen Ran’s resolute decision to divorce.

He was genuinely scared that Ranran wouldn’t compromise. After several months together, he understood her character well. Once she had made up her mind, she was the sort of person who wouldn’t easily retract her words.

Just like in the beginning, despite not being in love with him, she had agreed to fulfill her promise and carried out her duty as a wife, to him. And now, intent on divorcing him and leaving him, how could she possibly go back on her decision easily?

Thinking about this left him with a suffocating feeling in his chest. Instinctively, he reached up to his chest, replying in a low, hoarse voice:

“Take good care of her. It’s certain that Fu Jingyi won’t stop with just one phone call. In these two days, don’t leave Ranran alone.”

What Mo Xiuchen feared most was Fu Jingyi deliberately telling Ranran certain things, waiting for Ranran to leave him, then seizing the opportunity to make a move when she was alone.

That psychologically deranged old man was capable of anything.

“I understand, I won’t be going to the office for the next couple of days. I’ll stay at home with her.” Wen Jin settled on the sofa before calmly replying.

On the other end of the call, Mo Xiuchen listened to him speak, paused for a moment, then quietly said, “Ranran was crying so much this afternoon that her eyes are swollen. You should prepare some ice for her and apply it to her eyes. At a time like this, she definitely won’t be able to sleep…”

His underlying message was that Wen Jin should not leave her alone in the room at a time like this. That she shouldn’t be left alone without company.
